Kiska is home to its own active stratovolcano, the westernmost in the Aleutian chain. Once occupied by Japan in the Second World War, it was a strategic point in the famous Battle of Attu. Today the island forms part of the Aleutian Islands Wilderness, one of Alaska’s national wildlife refuges.
